 Late March 2009

A few days in the 50s (F) and turtles emerge from their underwater wintering, lining up in the sun on partially submerged tree trunks and branches. The light wash of green has deepened and more Celandines have appeared like yellow stars against the littered brown of last year's leaves.

Freshwater algae, the unicellular green entities that appear wherever conditions allow, coat the bubbles of methane produced by the decomposition of prior years' organic material and alert me to avoid stepping where my shoes might sink and rise with a slurping, sucking sound.
